Abstract

This work shows that fantasy is powerful, liberating and therefore dangerous to those who fear change. In Mexico, one of the ways in which patriarchal society upholds its hegemony towards women is through la trampa romántica (the romantic trap). Romantic courtship and seduction drive women into submission and then, paradoxically, attribute to them an irrational inclination towards romance. Maria Novaro’s films Danzón and Lola, explore how script and camera conspire together to debunk the rules of the ball dance and the inclination in the children’s games toward romance.
