Abstract

Allusions are one of the cultural aspects that require adequate fluency in the culture and language of the ST and TT. They are more challenging to translate, and the process is reader-concentrated. According to Hatim and Mason ‘(1990),' translators should find target text equivalents for allusions of source text in such a manner that what has intentionally been covered is not explicitly explained, while the meaning of allusions is retrieved’’. In this study, the researcher compares the original version of Naguib Mahfouz's A Drift on the Nile (ثرثرة فوق النيل) with the Persian translation to identify the translator's strategies for translating the two forms of allusive elements: proper names and key phrases, as well as his success in introducing implicit meanings through the Lippihalme approach. The study's findings showed that the most prevalent method for translating allusive names was to retain the name with some additional guidance or with additional explanations, followed by replacing the name with another target language equivalent. Minimum change or literal translation is primarily employed for translating key-phrase allusions, followed by the addition of extra-allusive guidance and the use of a standard translation.
